Information on New Buffalo Township Weather Sirens

As of September 1st, 2024, the weather sirens positioned around the Township will no longer go off in a weather event. The system is old and not reliable. When the sirens go off, you still need to know and understand why the sirens have been activated. With current technology, not only are you getting the notice, but you are getting the information you need at the same time.

The sirens were also used as a warning for any emergencies at the DC Cook Nuclear Plant. However, they also no longer utilize the sirens to warn people, feeling that phone and internet are a more effect way.

There are several weather apps and other options for getting important information. Here are two that we suggest that can be used during emergencies on your electronic device:

B-WARN! ALERT PROGRAM:

This is an Opt-IN mass notification service that allows the county to send out alert messages to you.

Receive messages by entering your contact information and subscribe to automated notifications you want based on info and locations you are interested in.

IPAWS:

The Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS) is FEMA's national system for local alerting that provides authenticated emergency and life-saving information to the public through mobile phones using Wireless Emergency Alerts, to radio and television via the Emergency Alert System, and on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Radio.
